Dear Friends of Aschiana,
In collaboration with Arena Stage, we are pleased to invite you to Charles Randolph Wright’s new play, “Love in Afghanistan,” on Sunday, October 27, 2013 at 7:30pm.
The play centers around the relationship between Roya, an Afghan woman working as an interpreter at Bagram Air Force Base, and Duke an African-American hip hop star who is in Afghanistan to entertain the troops. In the play, we learn that ROYA is bacha posh, a woman disguised as a man to obtain work. This original work explores gender, culture, and conflict and issues that confront both American and Afghan cultures. Aschiana Foundation USA has been a part of the production, and we’re delighted to have this opportunity to introduce Aschiana’s work to Arena Stage’s audiences.
For each ticket sold for the October 27th production of “Love in Afghanistan,” Arena Stage will donate 30% of the ticket price to Aschiana Foundation. This generous collaboration from Arena Stage couldn’t come at a better time. As funding from donor states is reduced, Afghanistan faces a presidential and security transition next year, and the demand for Aschiana’s service will grow as its resources are declining. After more than 25 years of war and conflict, there are an estimated 600,000 working street children in Afghanistan. Their work often provides the only means of support for their families, but leaves them vulnerable. They often have only a piece of bread a day and little chance to go to school. Similarly, people in internally displaced persons camps are isolated, face harsh weather, crowded conditions, and are unable to make a living. Aschiana serves these populations that others overlook. Aschiana offers food, healthcare, literacy, vocational training, and a sense of belonging and hope.
